Do you ever have those days when you just want to smash a guitar like Meatloaf’s “Bat Out of Hell?”
Or maybe Witchy Woman describe you better? “A restless spirit on an endless flight.”
Well you can always do like Daniel Powter, “Stand in the line just to hear the new low” and feel sorry for yourself…OR maybe you want to do something about it and learn from the Eagles to “take it easy, don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy.”
When angry tenants are calling your office all day, work orders are piling up, and you’re short-handed because one of your engineers didn’t show up, a property manager needs to get the job done. It might not always be an easy day at the office, but being able to handle and manage the stress can make it more tolerable.
Everyone has their own way of handling stress. One possible way could be a musical escape, but there are an infinite amount of outlets that can help to relax away the stress and refocus where it matters the most, on the job…
A soundtrack to put a little boogie in my de-stressing advice:
“The past is the past, you know. Can’t worry about the past cause that was yesterday.” – Fabolous
The past can’t be changed so there is no use dwelling on it. Ruminating on past events can bring about repetitive negative thoughts that can lead you away from productivity and create more stress. Learn from the past, but use experiences in a constructive way instead of ripping yourself apart. Tomorrow is another day; so make it better.
“I’m gonna soak up the sun; I’m gonna tell everyone to lighten up.” – Cheryl Crow
Sometimes the best thing for you to do is get some fresh air. Kathleen Hall, Founder & CEO of the Stress Institute says outdoor sights and sounds can help distract you from worries so that you can refresh and tackle the rest of the day.
“Say what you wanna say, and let the words fall out. Honestly I wanna see you be brave.” – Sara Bareilles
Holding back and not discussing something at work or even in your personal life can cause massive amounts of stress. If no one knows the issue nothing can be done and your stressful situation just gets worse. Step out of your comfort zone if you find the issue really starts to affect your work and life.
“I shake it off, I shake it off.” – Taylor Swift
Literally shaking yourself can be a great way to de-stress. There’s nothing figurative about it. Experts claim shaking is a very effective form of stress management. Stress can be both mental and physical so shaking can break up the physical tension and relieve some of your symptoms. Sometimes we don’t even know we are tensing up our bodies. So next time you’re sitting at your desk trying to refocus be like Swift, and shake?
“And when you smile…The whole world stops and stares for a while.” – Bruno Mars
I want you to do me a favor right now and smile. I bet you will feel a little better just with that one small action. Just making yourself smile can enhance your mood with an added bonus of relieving stress. A study conducted by University of Kansas psychologists shows that just the act of smiling can help when dealing with stressful situations. So next time you feel like you’re going to boil over just turn that frown upside down!
“Just let it breathe. Let it breathe.” – Hootie and the Blowfish
When stressed your body starts producing the “fight or flight response” and your breathing becomes heavier, requiring more oxygen. To combat this issue all you have to do is what comes naturally to us…BREATHE!! Meditation and concentrating on slowing your breath can calm your body and stress to help you refocus and carry on.
“You could go the distance, You could run the mile” – The Script
Last, but certainly not least, work out that stress with a good sweat. The Stress Management Society says exercise decreases stress hormones while simultaneously releasing mood-enhancing chemicals to help cope with stress. Exercise releases endorphins, which are in simple terms happy hormones. So hit the gym and get happy to relieve some of the stresses on the job.
Hopefully now I’ve got you grooving your way to a day full of new ways to de-stress and refocus!
